How to Keep Your Skin Looking Youthful

By Dr. Steve Xu MD – Head of Medical Advisory Board at Geologie Skincare

In order to keep your skin looking plump and elastic, there are basic lifestyle choices you can make. Here are a few of them:

Get proper sleep

Lack of sleep raises your cortisol levels, which triggers inflammation and breaks down the proteins that keep your skin smooth. It can add years to your face, most notably dark under eyes and bags — that “tired” look. Try these tips for some snooze:

● Say no to caffeine in the late afternoon and evening.

● Bedtime: retire and rise about the same time daily.

● Don’t drink alcohol to chill out — a warm bath is the better option.

● Before bed, read a book, not on a phone or tablet.

● If noise keeps you awake, use earplugs.

Kojic acid can help with the dark under eyes and the bags. It stunts the production of melanin and evens the skin tone and fades dark spots — it’s often referred to as a skin “lightener.”

Start Moisturizing

When you moisturize regularly, you trap water in the skin, which can help delay the appearance of fine lines. Here’s how it happens: Hyaluronic acid — the chief ingredient in vital morning face cream — slows the evaporation of water from your skin’s barrier and makes stores of hydration available. Plump and hydrated skin is less likely to crack and form fine lines.

Eat Veggies

Antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, healthy fats from oily fish and nuts, beta carotene, vitamin E, zinc and selenium all help support healthy skin.

There is some data that suggests Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that supports the immune system, which attacks free radicals from pollution and toxins that can damage the skin. Try some:

Blackcurrants, blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes.

Protect from sun damage

You hear it all the time: Use SPF every day. Here’s why: more than 90% of skin aging occurs as a result of sun damage. Extended periods of time in the sun can jump start wrinkles and age spots. Remember, sun damage happens on a minute-to-minute basis.

Try the Unisex SPF30, a broad spectrum sunscreen with a moisturizer. Interested in taking care of your skin? Take their men’s skincare diagnostic and let’s see how we can help.
