The Fitness Key: Unlocking Resilience for Firefighters’ Overall Wellness

By: Jesse Clark – Firefighter/Paramedic Boise Fire Department, Level 2 CrossFit Coach

I was 13 years on as a first responder and I felt like an unstoppable force. Challenges bounced off me like sparks off bunker gear. But then, in 2019, tragedy struck. I found a fellow firefighter, a friend, who had taken his own life while we were on shift.

The impact of that devastating event rocked me to my core. However, through the support of my loved ones, a proactive approach, and the transformative power of fitness, I emerged from the darkness stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Sharing my journey to resilience might help other firefighters and first responders better their overall wellness. But to be clear, I’m not a physician or mental health expert. This isn’t about replacing professional help but rather bridging the gap and speeding up your recovery through the incredible world of fitness.

Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about adapting, standing strong, and swiftly recovering when life throws its fiercest flames our way. That’s why I want to redefine resilience for you: It’s about being an unstoppable force when you can, rising triumphantly when you must and being able to recognize when your journey to better overall health needs attention.

The five domains of resiliency are:
  • Physical Health:  A goal of no acute or chronic injury/disease processes and no prescription medications in the last six months.
  • Physical Fitness: A combination of cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness to perform occupational tasks stronger and without fatigue.
  • Mental Health: Mental health is a state of psychological well-being or an absence of mental illness.
  • Job-Related Competency: A set of measurable performance aspects, including knowledge, professional skills, job attitudes, behaviors, team workability, and organizational skills. All leading to satisfactory performance.
  • Lifestyle: Daily activities and relationships between the individual’s behavior and their environment and how these activities affect their overall health status.

Guess what? By harnessing the power of physical fitness, we can directly ignite and amplify the other four domains, fueling our resilience and overall well-being. When we prioritize our physical fitness, we positively influence our physical and mental health, job-related competency, and lifestyle.

  • Blaze Through Physical Health: Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, increases lung capacity, enhances muscular strength and endurance, strengthens bones, helps maintain a healthy weight and slows down aging. It directly impacts 40 chronic diseases and illnesses. It’s like donning a powerful shield against health challenges.
  • Conquer Mental Obstacles: Witness the eruption of endorphins as you ignite your workout routine. Regular exercise has the incredible power to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s your secret weapon to fortify your mental fortress and unleash your mental well-being.
  • Masterful Performance on the Frontline: Picture yourself as a well-oiled machine, moving with unmatched agility and strength. By prioritizing physical fitness, you’ll enhance your job-related competency, stamina, coordination, and overall performance as a firefighter.
  • Fuel Up Your Lifestyle: When you ignite your fitness journey, it triggers a cascade of positive lifestyle changes. As you commit to exercise, you naturally become more mindful of your nutrition, hydration, and stress management. Watch as your entire lifestyle ignites with vitality and well-being.

Are you ready to unleash the full power of your resilience and achieve the triumph you deserve? Embrace these fiery keys that will unlock your potential as an unstoppable firefighter:

  • Blaze Trails with Consistent Exercise: Ignite your fire with 4-5 days per week of 30-60 minutes of exercise at a high or moderate intensity. Engage in activities that challenge your cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. This routine will lay the foundation for improvement in all four resiliency domains.
  • Harness the Power of Active Recovery Days: Embrace the beauty of 1-2 days per week for active recovery. Engage in low-intensity exercises such as stretching, yoga, or light aerobic activities. Active recovery allows your body to rest and repair while still promoting blood circulation and mobility. This ensures you can stick to a consistent routine.
  • Stoke the Flames with a Proper Warm-Up: Prime your body for battle by investing 5-8 minutes in a sizzling warm-up routine. This ignites your muscles, boosts blood flow, and safeguards you against injuries. Dynamic stretches and light aerobic exercises will set your fire ablaze.
  • Unleash Your True Potential with Designed Programming: Ignite your workout routine with carefully crafted programs designed specifically for firefighters. These programs minimize the risk of exercise-induced injuries and maximize your overall performance.
  • Conquer New Horizons Outdoors: Step into the wild and breathe in the exhilarating air of freedom. Incorporate outdoor workouts into your routine, following the legendary 20-minute-a-day, 5-hours-a-month, 3-days-a-year rule. Let nature’s grandeur ignite your spirit and rejuvenate your soul.
  • Cool Down and Reignite Your Fire: After each fiery workout, let your body cool down gradually. Spend a few minutes on a proper cooldown, mobilizing your body and allowing it to recover from the intense flames. Embrace the calm after the storm.
  • Forge Unity in Gear and Crew Workouts: Strengthen the bonds with your fellow firefighters by igniting teamwork and camaraderie. Incorporate gear and crew workouts into your routine to enhance job-related competency, coordination, and efficiency.
  • Sleep – The Secret Weapon: Prioritize your well-deserved rest. If you’re sleep-deprived (less than 5 hours/night), prioritize sleep over a workout. Adequate sleep is the fuel that ignites your physical and mental recovery, supercharging your resilience.
  • Timing is Everything: Avoid the bedtime inferno. Try to complete your workouts earlier in the day to allow your body sufficient time to wind down and prepare for a restful sleep.

It’s time to ignite the fire within you, unleash your resilience, and emerge victorious in every battle you face as a firefighter. Together, let’s stoke the flames of resilience, support one another, and triumphantly unlock our ultimate potential through the transformative power of fitness. Let the fire burn bright within you, for you are an unstoppable force!
