A few simple steps can make this winter look and feel a little brighter
By CRACKYL staff
Feeling a bit gloomy as the days get shorter here in the Northern Hemisphere? You’re not alone – seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects about 5 per cent of adults in the U.S., and it usually lasts about 40 per cent of the year.
Shorter daylight hours and decreased sunlight exposure have been linked to brain changes associated with SAD. So it’s worth trying to maximize the amount of natural light we receive during these darker days. Here are a few ways to do it:
Declutter
Clutter can block natural light from entering a room, so take down those heavy curtains and blinds, and move furniture away from your windows. Then take a look outside, and see if you can do some pruning: Overgrown trees and shrubs can cast shadows on your windows.
Lighten Up
Painting your walls (if you’re up for the project) in light, neutral colors can help reflect natural light and make your space feel brighter. Dark furniture can absorb sunlight, so opt for lighter colors. Light-colored furniture and accessories can help brighten up your space.
Furniture Choices
Glass-topped side tables and coffee tables can be a game-changer for maximizing natural light in your home. Unlike solid wood furniture, which can obstruct light flow, glass-topped pieces allow light to pass through, making your space feel brighter and more open. By choosing glass-topped furniture, you can create a more airy and inviting atmosphere, especially in rooms with limited natural light.
Smart Window Treatments
Less is often more when it comes to window treatments. Sheer curtains or lightweight blinds can let sunlight in while still providing you with privacy. Motorized blinds are a great option for controlling the amount of light.
Use Mirrors
Placing a mirror opposite a window can help reflect sunlight deeper into your space, increasing the amount of natural light in a room. This simple trick can make a significant difference, especially in rooms that don’t receive direct sunlight.
Artificial Lighting
Artificial light can be a great way to supplement natural light. Place lamps and overhead lights near windows to create a brighter atmosphere. When choosing artificial light sources, opt for bulbs that emit full-spectrum light, which mimics natural sunlight.
By following these simple tips, you can turn your home into a brighter and cheerful space, and hopefully alleviate the winter blues a little.
