Q: With skincare being top of mind in my profession, I was recently told I should be using a toner on my skin. Is this as beneficial as suggested?
A: Everyone has their own skincare routine, and you should find one that benefits your skin while fitting it into your daily schedule.
A skin toner is a liquid skincare product that is typically applied to your skin after cleansing and before applying moisturizer. The main reason to use a toner is to balance the pH of your skin after cleansing. Skin’s pH is naturally a bit acidic, which helps to maintain its protective barrier.
Cleansers often have higher pH values, which can disrupt this balance. There is a range of toners you can buy over-the-counter, and these are available in various formulations, such as water-based, alcohol free, and those containing active ingredients. Picking the right one for you depends on the benefits you are looking for. For example, deep cleansing: a toner removes excess dirt and residue left on the skin after cleansing.
Some toners contain ingredients that temporarily tighten your skin and minimize the appearance of pores. Humectants, which attract and retain moisture, are often found in toners, so they can help hydrate your skin. Applying a toner can also help prepare your skin to better absorb additional skin products, such as serums and moisturizers. Skin redness can be reduced with toners that contain ingredients such as chamomile, aloe vera, or green tea extract. The choices are out there, as well as the benefits. The question is, can you fit this into your skin routine?
