True air‑use efficiency emerges only when training, fitness, and stress management work together on the fireground
Two firefighters from a truck company climbed onto a roof to ventilate a multi-story home. One firefighter is a seasoned veteran; the other is a rookie. Which firefighter used their air more efficiently? Does experience automatically translate into efficiency in SCBA air consumption?
Experience may correlate with managing efficient SCBA use, but it is only a piece of a much larger puzzle. Training, physical and psychological stress responses all play critical roles in determining SCBA air consumption efficiency.
To further understand the concept, “experience” and “efficiency” should be defined within the context of the fire service.
Experience
- Years of service as a firefighter
- Operational time on the fire ground
- Exposure to realistic SCBA training
Efficiency
- Speed and accuracy in completing fireground tasks
- Ability to maintain a steady work pace without compromising safety or effectiveness
- Minimized downtime while maximizing operational availability
Operational Effectiveness
SCBA air consumption efficiency plays a vital role in firefighter safety, their operational effectiveness on the fireground, and their ability to function in hazardous environments.
Several variables contribute to air consumption efficiency, including physical exertion, breathing rates, decision-making under stress, and unpredictable conditions encountered during incidents.
Veteran firefighters often bring calm decision-making to chaotic environments. Familiarity with fireground operations can reduce panic, improve crew coordination, and lead to more effective operations. Maintaining composure matters when every breath counts. Proper training and experience can improve many of these variables, but they are never eliminated.
Experience Has Limits
Experience matters, undoubtedly. A strong understanding of SCBA use, sound decision-making under stress, and steadiness in chaotic environments are crucial to tactical effectiveness.
Hollander et al. (2023) explain that experienced firefighters use air more efficiently and regulate better during strain. However, experience alone may not guarantee efficiency.
There are inherent limitations to experience. Long tenure may lead to overconfidence in their abilities, lulling them into complacency. After decades in the fire service, even a skilled firefighter may find that strength, endurance, and recovery are not what they once were. This is one example of why fitness and realistic training are so important. Fortunately, many departments prioritize fitness training and skill-based training as part of their daily operations.
Training and Fitness
Physical fitness training improves health and physical abilities, which makes a department more effective on the fireground. Improving cardiovascular and muscular endurance impacts air consumption, and tasks such as search and rescue, forcible entry, and ventilation demand both aerobic capacity and short bursts of anaerobic effort, spiking heart rates.
Alternatively, skill-based training refines our hands-on operations and elevates everyone to a higher level of functioning, enhancing operational proficiency and decision-making.
Together, these elements elevate overall performance and efficiency on the fireground.
Psychological Stress
Psychological stress response is another significant factor in air consumption. Rookie firefighters may experience panic or tunnel vision in unfamiliar situations, leading to increased air consumption. In contrast, veteran firefighters often maintain composure because of repeated exposure to similar scenarios.
Experience has its advantages. This calm awareness allows veteran firefighters to assess conditions clearly, move purposefully, and operate more efficiently as a coordinated crew.
Training remains one of the most important tools for improving air consumption efficiency. Realistic training scenarios prepare firefighters in simulated stress environments, helping them understand both their capabilities and limitations.
Techniques such as tactical breathing can improve performance under pressure. According to Solan (2023), one commonly used method is box breathing, a simple, effective technique that helps regulate breathing, lower heart rate, and improve decision-making by shifting the body out of the “fight-or-flight” response. Managing psychological stress reduces panic and helps conserve air.
The emphasis on preparing firefighters with realistic training can not be overstated. Simulating “real-world” scenarios builds essential skills and conditions firefighters to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Mentorship
It is important to recognize that SCBA service times are often misunderstood. NIOSH ratings are based on an average consumption rate of 40 liters per minute (L/min). In reality, firefighting tasks such as stretching a 1¾ line, search and rescue, or roof ventilation can increase a firefighter’s air consumption to 80-120 L/min.
At 100 L/min, a NIOSH-rated 45-minute cylinder’s actual work time is approximately 12 minutes when the low-alarm sounds at 33% and 18 minutes until it is empty. With only five minutes to exit/escape, the impact is massive – potentially life-threatening not only to the individual, but also to the crew.
Air management is a team responsibility. The entire crew is at risk when one person runs out of air, so training together is essential. Pairing experienced firefighters with rookie firefighters creates valuable mentorship opportunities. Knowledge transfer not only benefits the rookie but also refines the veteran’s skills.
These moments build continuity, accountability, and coordination, making a more effective and cohesive team. My department implemented a mentorship program for probationary firefighters following academy graduation several years ago. Each probationary firefighter is paired with a company officer for continued skill development and training. This approach has paid dividends, improving both individual performance and crew dynamics.
Culture
Departments should consider fostering a culture that prioritizes realistic training, physical fitness, mental preparedness, and openness to change. Veteran firefighters, especially the company officers, play a crucial role in leading this effort. Their influence can create the “buy-in” that drives improvements, performance, and acceptance of change.
However, experience is not without its drawbacks. Complacency can be dangerous, even deadly. Some veteran firefighters resist new equipment, techniques, and technology, especially if previous methods have worked effectively. Change can be difficult, even when supported by evidence and improved outcomes.
So, Does Experience Equal Efficiency?
Not by itself. Experience helps, but true efficiency comes from the combination of training, fitness, composure, and willingness to evolve. Departments that value all four produce firefighters who work smarter and last longer when conditions are at their worst, and serve our communities more effectively; ultimately sending everyone home safely at the end of each shift.
