One topic kept resurfacing this week: what it actually costs to build a long, healthy career in the fire service. The words recruitment and retention were everywhere, yet what people were really circling around felt deeper and far more personal.

We’ve made real progress on the physical risks. We’ve built better systems, awareness, and protection. But the harder questions — the ones about identity, longevity, and what it takes to stay whole while doing this work — still sit just beneath the surface, shaping decisions in ways we rarely acknowledge out loud.
